Here's Why I Think USANA Health Sciences (NYSE:USNA) Is An Interesting Stock

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase ‘the next big thing’, even if that means buying ‘story stocks’ without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?’ Leuz et. al. found that it is ‘quite common’ for investors to lose money by buying into ‘pump and dump’ schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like USANA Health Sciences (NYSE:USNA). Now, I’m not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can’t shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital – but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is USANA Health Sciences Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. USANA Health Sciences managed to grow EPS by 14% per year, over three years. That’s a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It seems USANA Health Sciences is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That’s not bad, but it doesn’t point to ongoing future growth, either.

While it’s always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check USANA Health Sciences’s balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are USANA Health Sciences Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we’re pleased to report that USANA Health Sciences insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 41% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I’m always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping US$695m. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!

Should You Add USANA Health Sciences To Your Watchlist?

One positive for USANA Health Sciences is that it is growing EPS. That’s nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I’d consider keeping the company on a watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example – USANA Health Sciences has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

Although USANA Health Sciences certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you’re looking for.
