Here's Why I Think Kirkland Lake Gold (TSE:KL) Is An Interesting Stock

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, ‘Long shots almost never pay off.’

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Kirkland Lake Gold (TSE:KL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I’m not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can’t shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Kirkland Lake Gold’s Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Kirkland Lake Gold has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don’t think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, Kirkland Lake Gold’s EPS soared from US$1.80 to US$2.93, over the last year. That’s a impressive gain of 63%.

One way to double-check a company’s growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Kirkland Lake Gold shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 51% to 56%, and revenue is growing. That’s great to see, on both counts.

Are Kirkland Lake Gold Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Kirkland Lake Gold has a market capitalization of CA$18b, we wouldn’t expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$599m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations over CA$11b, like Kirkland Lake Gold, the median CEO pay is around CA$9.3m.

The CEO of Kirkland Lake Gold only received CA$3.6m in total compensation for the year ending . That’s clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. While the level of CEO compensation isn’t a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I’d also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does Kirkland Lake Gold Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

You can’t deny that Kirkland Lake Gold has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That’s attractive. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don’t forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Kirkland Lake Gold look rather interesting indeed. You should always think about risks though.
