Coronavirus live updates: Australia’s second quarter GDP contracts at record pace; San Francisco unveils plan for reopening businesses, schools

The U.S. reported just 33,888 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, the lowest daily tally reported in weeks, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. However, daily case reporting tends to dip early in the week with local public health offices closed for the weekend. Across the country, 26 states reported rising cases, on average, by at least 5% compared with a week ago.

Meanwhile in Australia, the country’s economy shrank at a record pace in the second quarter of 2020, shrinking 7% from April to June from the previous quarter, as coronavirus restrictions hit the economy.
